Making Deliberative Mini-Publics (DMPs) Better? Recent findings about the recruitment, public support and impact on policy of DMP’s

Deliberative mini-publics (DMPs) are increasingly implemented across democracies, with Belgium at the forefront of this movement. Nevertheless DMPs still encounter significant challenges:
  • Participation – Recruiting a diverse range of participants, especially from disadvantaged groups.
  • Support – Connecting mini-publics with the broader public to generate support and interest among citizens outside the rooms.
  • Impact – Ensuring that the recommendations from mini-publics influence actual policy decisions.

Leading researchers, including Sofie Marien (KU Leuven), Jean-Benoit Pilet (ULB), and Min Reuchamps (UC Louvain), have been exploring these challenges through various ambitious projects. They will present their findings. Additionally, Emilien Paulis (University of Luxembourg) and Kristof Jacobs (RU Nijmegen) will share insights from recent projects in Luxembourg and the Netherlands. This workshop aims to create a meaningful dialogue between researchers and practitioners, public servant and public authorities to enhance the effectiveness of mini-publics. We will discuss key research findings and explore practical strategies for improving participation, public engagement, and policy impact.

Agenda highlights:

  • Presentation of recent research findings on DMPs
  • Interactive discussions with practitioners and stakeholders
  • Collaborative sessions to identify actionable insights for the future

This event is a cooperation between ULB, UCLouvain, KULeuven, Tree company and G1000.
